Originating in India, Diwali is celebrated all over the world and encourages a strong sense of unity among families, friends and communities. Diwali means “row of lighted lamps” with light symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty and knowledge over ignorance. Houses are decorated with diyas (candles), deepavali (lamps) and Rangoli artwork (patterns on the ground created by coloured powder or rice) during the holiday.

The Canucks celebrate the diversity and vibrance of Vancouver’s South Asian community by commemorating Diwali – one of the most important annual holidays for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs (Bandi Chhor Divas). Proceeds from the auction of player-worn warmup jerseys plus sales of additional merchandise collection were donated to PMRC, a local community organization that works to revitalize and support Vancouver’s historic Punjabi Market neighbourhood. The Canucks For Kids Fund also made a $20,000 donation split evenly between Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, a Sikh-faith led volunteer organization supporting Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and KidsPlay Foundation, a local non-profit organization that engages youth through sports.

Pride is part of Hockey Is for Everyone, a joint NHL and NHLPA initiative celebrating diversity and inclusion in hockey. We have a vibrant and thriving 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Vancouver, and we strive for everyone to feel welcome, safe and seen by Canucks Sports & Entertainment. We are committed to making a valuable impact by working with community organizations to amplify, educate, celebrate and inspire our fans.

In our 2021.22 season, were honoured to work with Swedish artist, Hermine ‘Mio’ Linzie, to create this year’s limited-edition Pride jersey. After worn by players in warmup, each jersey was auctioned in support of You Can Play. 10% of sales from the Pride merch collection including mugs, hoodies, tees, pucks, and stickers were also donated to You Can Play.

In addition, a $10,000 donation on behalf of the Canucks for Kids Fund was given to both Rainbow Refugee, a chosen beneficiary from the Vancouver Pride Society, and QMUNITY. Both QMUNITY and Rainbow Refugee are local non-profit organizations based in Vancouver that support and assist 2SLGBTQIA+ people and their allies.
