Black History Month is part of Hockey Is For Everyone, a joint NHL and NHLPA initiative celebrating diversity and inclusion in hockey. The Canucks held our inaugural Black History Month game in February 2022 as an opportunity to celebrate the experiences, contributions, and accomplishments of Black Canadians and their communities. Additional clubs across the league also commemorate Black History Month with game nights that honour and celebrate Black excellence in the community.
The Canucks were honoured to work with Jason Bempong, creative director of local clothing brand Sleepless Mindz, to design the 2022 Black History Month limited-edition jersey inspired by his Ghanaian roots. Proceeds from the auction of player-worn warmup jerseys plus sales of additional merchandise collection were donated to BC Black History Awareness Society (BCBHAS), a registered charity whose purpose is to provide resources that document, educate and spread awareness of past, present and future achievements of BC’s Black community members. The Canucks For Kids Fund also made a $20,000 donation to BCHAS.
Additional community organizations that joined the Canucks for the team’s Black History Month celebration also included the Black Business Association of BC, Black Women Connect Vancouver and Ninandotoo Society.
